Library/Biblioteca

Bibliotecaria/Librarian: Shannon Kehoe

The Sánchez Elementary School Library is a vibrant learning space where students explore literature and connect their learning across school, home, and community.

The library program promotes the very best of children’s literature through engaging activities that help students deepen their enjoyment and understanding of books. Students read widely, create and write, and participate in learning experiences that support classroom instruction while honoring their identities, cultures, and community knowledge.

Students are encouraged to become enthusiastic, lifelong readers through personalized book recommendations whenever possible. The library collection continues to grow, with hundreds of new and current titles in both English and Spanish, including books requested by students.

At every grade level, students develop research and technology skills appropriate to their developmental level. Library learning integrates the arts, science, and mathematics through hands-on exploration, inquiry-based projects, and creative problem-solving connected to literature and classroom learning. Lessons include Digital Citizenship, helping students make safe, responsible, and ethical choices when using technology and the internet. Social-emotional learning is supported through literature as well as mindfulness practices such as breathing techniques and mindful movement.

The librarian collaborates closely with classroom teachers to provide materials and resources that match students’ interests and learning needs.

Throughout the year, the library hosts special events such as author visits, guest readers, cultural presentations (including programs similar to the Art Smart cultural programs offered by the Austin Public Library), an upcoming book fair, and multiple book giveaways. Giveaways include books by visiting authors and free books curated by the librarian through a First Book grant, featuring titles that reflect diverse cultures, identities, and genres.

Parents and caregivers are welcome to check out books from the library from 8:00–8:30 a.m, Mondays and Fridays without prior notice. Additional days and times for checkout or volunteering opportunities are welcome and can be arranged by appointment via email.
